The Latvian pop-rock band “Jumprava” will perform at the Valka Municipality Cultural Centre on Saturday, 14 November, at 6 p.m. Musicians Aigars Grāvers, Aigars Krēsla, Aigars Grauba and Ainārs Ašmanis will present a concert titled “Arheoloģija” (“Archaeology”). It will be the band’s first show outside Riga with this programme, which they have already staged four times at the “Daile” music hall in the capital.

Tickets cost between 15 and 25 euros. They are sold at www.bilesuparadize.lv and at the Valka Cultural Centre box office on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

What the programme involves

The band has been active since the 1980s. Its best-known songs include “Ziemeļmeita”, “Peldētājs”, “Baltā”, “Vēlreiz” and “Tālu aizgāja”.

Krēsla told the regional outlet “Ziemeļlatvija” that the programme was designed to require little technical equipment. Besides playing, the musicians will talk with the audience, share stories about the band’s past and present, and answer questions. He said every performance is improvised and no two concerts are alike. The group also pulls songs from its archive that members themselves no longer remember, and will play its hits too.

Grāvers said it will not be a classic concert; the music will complement the conversations with the audience. In his words, audiences have so far been responsive and have joined in from the first minutes.

“Ziemeļmeita” will not be performed this time because it is more electronic, while the other hits will be played. The musicians said they take audience suggestions into account when building the programme, but do not change the setlist during a show.

Ties to Valka

Grāvers recalled performing in Valka at rating contests and other events when he played in the band “Vitamīns”. Krēsla said the band last visited Valka a very long time ago.

On their long collaboration, the musicians said disputes happen but there are no major conflicts, and their differing personalities ultimately bring them together. They intend to keep performing as long as they can.
