A Trip Back in Time

The Gulbene-Alūksne narrow-gauge train is more than just a means of transport; it is a journey into history. This railway is one of the few regularly operating narrow-gauge lines in Europe, popular among foreign tourists. The author, accompanying their parents on July 11, chose this experience over attending the Lampa festival in Cēsis.

What to Expect

Before the ride, participants can explore the depot and try a handcar. Then comes a leisurely journey through the Vidzeme region, with stops to taste goods from local producers. This experience is part of the "Bānīša zeme" (Bānītis Land) project, which emerged after mild rivalry between the Gulbene and Alūksne municipalities—each wanted to attract more tourists. The result is a unified concept with its own brand, used by local entrepreneurs.

The excursion offers a chance to enjoy a slow pace and natural beauty, a rarity in today's fast-paced world. The train feels like a Latvian Hogwarts Express—magical and unforgettable.
