Latvian Sprinter Gunta Vaičule to Retire After This Week's Competition

Latvian athlete Gunta Vaičule has announced that she will compete in her final race this week at the Baltic Team Championships, bringing her professional career to a close.

Last weekend, Vaičule won the Latvian national championship in the 200 meters. She described the decision as deliberate and long-contemplated over the past year and a half. Rather than bitterness, she feels joy and satisfaction, believing this is the right moment to stop.

Vaičule cited several reasons for her retirement. At age 31, her body's ability to recover has diminished. Additionally, raising children makes it difficult to spend extensive time abroad needed for higher-level competition. She also noted the lack of support from the Latvian Olympic Unit, which she understands. However, she is optimistic that closing this door will open new opportunities.

Throughout her career, Vaičule competed in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro and 2024 Paris Olympic Games. She also participated in five European Championships and World Championships. Her best result at the World Championships was 12th place, while at the European Championships she twice finished in the top ten.
