Hudson-Smith reclaims European 400m title
Hudson-Smith won back the European Championships gold in the men's 400m, while new champions were crowned in the women's hammer throw and 400m hurdles.
At the European Athletics Championships, Hudson-Smith won the men's 400m final with a time of 44.17 seconds, finishing 0.23 seconds ahead of France's Mouhamadou Abdallahi Konte. It marked his third European title in the event, having previously won gold in 2018 and 2022. He did not compete at the 2024 championships, where Belgium's Alexander Doom took the win. Third place went to the Netherlands' Jonas Fijfer, whose time of 44.41 seconds set a new Dutch national record.
Hammer throw and hurdles
In the women's hammer throw, Finland's Silja Kosonen claimed her first European title with a winning throw of 76.28 metres. Italy's Sara Fantini took silver with 74.35 metres, while Norway's Beatrice Nedberg-Jaano finished third with 72.88 metres.
In the women's 400m hurdles, Slovakia's Emma Zapletova won her first European gold, crossing the line in 52.91 seconds. She had previously taken bronze at last year's World Championships. Britain's Emily Newnham finished second with a new personal best, 0.42 seconds behind, while Portugal's Fatumata Binta Djallo took bronze in 52.55 seconds, setting a new Portuguese record.
In the men's 110m hurdles, Switzerland's Jason Joseph won in 13.12 seconds, edging out France's Just Kwaou-Mathey by 0.04 seconds. Poland's Jakub Szymanski finished third, 0.14 seconds behind the winner. The top two finishers both recorded their season-best times in the event.
