On July 6, 2026, the Palestinian militant group Hamas announced it had dissolved the committee that had been coordinating civil governance in the Gaza Strip. The group stated that the committee's duties would be transferred to a new administrative structure composed of independent technocrats, and that previous employees would not be dismissed.
The committee effectively functioned as a government but lacked international recognition. While the move could signal Hamas's willingness to cede control over civil affairs, the group continues to reject unconditional disarmament. It remains unclear whether the new administration will be able to begin operations, what role Hamas will play behind the scenes, and who will take responsibility for security forces in Gaza.
Disarmament of Hamas had been a key condition for appointing a new administration with better prospects of securing international aid for reconstructing the devastated region. Since seizing power in Gaza in 2007, Hamas had run a parallel administration to the internationally recognized Palestinian Authority based in Ramallah.
