Harvey Weinstein Sentenced to 15 Years for Sexual Assault
Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has received a 15-year prison sentence over a criminal sexual act against former assistant Miriam Haley; he denies wrongdoing but apologised to anyone he may have hurt.
A New York court has sentenced former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein to 15 years in prison, following a jury's verdict last year finding him guilty of a criminal sexual act committed against his former assistant, Miriam Haley.
Addressing the court in a victim impact statement, Haley said the assault left lasting damage to her life and sense of safety, effects she said may never fully fade.
Weinstein, who appeared before the court in a wheelchair, continued to deny the allegations but offered an apology "to anyone I may have hurt by my actions."
The case is part of a legal saga stretching back years: Weinstein has already spent six years behind bars while proceedings unfolded, holds a separate conviction for sex offences in Los Angeles, and has stood trial three times in New York over rape and abuse claims.
He was first convicted and sentenced over the Haley case in 2020, but New York's top court threw out that conviction in 2024, finding he had not received a fair trial. A retrial followed, and last year he was convicted again over the assault on Haley.
During the original 2020 trial, jurors heard from three women — Haley, actress Jessica Mann, and model Kaja Sokola. Haley testified that Weinstein assaulted her at a Manhattan apartment in 2006, a charge on which the jury convicted him.
Speaking to the BBC, Haley said she chose to testify because she felt compelled to defend herself and the truth.
