Henderson joins Chelsea after World Cup injury

Veteran midfielder Jordan Henderson has joined Chelsea. The 36-year-old Englishman spent the past season at Premier League club Brentford, but his contract was terminated by mutual consent, making him a free agent. He has now signed a two-year deal with the London side.

Speaking to the BBC, Henderson said the scale of the club, head coach Shavi Alonso, for whom he has great respect, and the quality of the players made this an opportunity he could not turn down. He described it as a "great chance" that he simply had to take.

Henderson made his Premier League debut back in 2008, when his then-employers Sunderland suffered a 0–5 defeat at the hands of Chelsea. He spent the most successful years of his career at Liverpool, where over a 12-year spell he won the Champions League, the FA Cup, the League Cup and the UEFA Club World Cup.

After leaving Liverpool, he moved to Saudi Arabia to play for Al-Ettifaq. A year later, he headed to Ajax in Amsterdam, and before the most recent season he switched to Brentford.

This summer, Henderson was called up to England's squad for the World Cup. However, after the team's victory over Mexico, he took a bad fall and broke his arm. Despite that injury, he has now completed his move to Chelsea and will look to regain full fitness at his new club.
