Himalayan flood and landslide death toll rises to 750
The confirmed death toll from catastrophic floods and landslides in Nepal and China's Tibet region has reached 750, with more than 3,000 people still missing.
Authorities announced on Sunday that the confirmed death toll from landslides and floods in the Himalayan region — spanning Nepal and China's Tibet Autonomous Region — has climbed to 750. Around 3,044 people remain unaccounted for.
The disaster began on Wednesday morning, causing severe damage on both sides of the border. Nepal has borne the brunt of the destruction, with 734 confirmed deaths and 2,498 people still listed as missing.
Tibet also hit hard
In China's Tibet region, 16 people have died and 546 remain missing, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing in the affected areas, though difficult mountain terrain and widespread destruction are hampering the effort.
Victims reach India too
The disaster's impact has extended into neighboring India, where seven bodies have been recovered from rivers flowing in from Nepal. Indian officials say the victims are believed to have been swept across the border by the floodwaters.
No official information has yet been released on the exact cause of the disaster or how the death toll may change going forward, but search efforts in both countries continue.
