Hewett and Reid lead GB to fifth World Team Cup title in wheelchair tennis

Great Britain have won the World Team Cup for a fifth time, beating defending champions Japan 2-1 in the final in Florida. The event is regarded as the wheelchair tennis equivalent of the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup.

The decisive point came in the doubles, where Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid beat Tokito Oda and Daisuke Arai 6-1, 6-2. It marked Reid's fifth straight win over Arai in as many meetings between the two.

Reid had put Britain ahead on Saturday with a 6-2, 6-2 singles win over world number 21 Arai. The start of the second singles rubber was delayed by six hours because of extreme heat in Orlando.

Hewett, who had beaten the world number one in the US Open singles final just a week earlier, was unable to repeat that feat, losing 6-4, 7-5 to Oda in singles. He made up for it later in the doubles alongside Reid.

Reid said the team was pleased to get the title back, having also been part of Britain's winning squads in 2015, 2019, 2023 and 2024. Hewett said it was the first time the tie had come down to the deciding doubles for the team and praised the squad's spirit throughout the week.

Britain's team also included 21-year-old Ben Bartram and was led by captain Martyn Whait. The side had already beaten South Korea and the Netherlands earlier in the competition before facing Japan in the final.
