Hewett and Reid reach US Open wheelchair singles quarter-finals
British pair Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid both advanced to the men's wheelchair singles quarter-finals at the US Open on Wednesday, setting up tough tests against top-ranked opponents.
British duo Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid both booked their places in the men's wheelchair singles quarter-finals at the US Open on Wednesday.
Second seed Hewett, a four-time champion in New York, cruised past Spain's Daniel Caverzaschi 6-0, 6-2, conceding just two games. He will next face American Casey Ratzlaff for a spot in the semi-finals.
Reid faced a tougher challenge against Frenchman Stephane Houdet, eventually prevailing 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 after two hours and 13 minutes on court. His quarter-final opponent will be defending champion and top seed Tokito Oda of Japan, who has claimed the last six Grand Slam singles titles.
Hewett and Reid are also chasing a sixth US Open wheelchair doubles title as a pair. Having won their opening-round match on Tuesday, they now face a semi-final against Oda and Argentina's Gustavo Fernandez.
Elsewhere, two other British players exited the tournament on Wednesday. Andy Lapthorne and Greg Slade were both eliminated in the first round of the quad singles competition. Lapthorne lost 6-2, 6-1 to top seed Niels Vink of the Netherlands, while Slade fell 6-4, 6-2 to Argentina's Gonzalo Lazarte.
Lapthorne remains in contention in the quad doubles event, having reached the semi-finals alongside South African partner Leon Els.
