In ice hockey, the Optibet Hockey League (OHL) is Latvia's top domestic championship. On Saturday, 24 October, champions Mogo/RSU defeated Kyiv Capitals 5-1 (1-0, 2-1, 2-0). Both teams are near the top of the standings.
The sides had already met once this season, and Mogo won that game 9-2. This time the game started more quietly: only one shot on target was recorded in the first period, and it was scored by Janis Zemitis. Soon afterwards Mogo had a power play and a chance to double the lead but failed to use it. In the first 20 minutes Mogo goaltender Karlis Mezsargs made 13 saves, while Capitals goaltender Romi Hunonen faced five shots.
How the game unfolded
Early in the second period Zemitis scored again. Exactly at the halfway point of the game, Deivids Sarkanis, the OHL's top scorer, cut the deficit to one goal for Capitals. Less than two minutes later, Richards Grinbergs restored the two-goal lead.
Mogo opened the third period on a power play. After Gatis Sprukts took a penalty, Mogo had a two-man advantage for about a minute and a half and did not score. At the end of the ordinary power play, however, Ernests Krums finally scored. Raul Ozollapa then deflected a shot from Daugavins to make it 5-1.
