Croatia's Olympic Champion Kolak Wins European Championship Javelin Title

Croatian Olympic champion Sara Kolak won the javelin throw at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham on Sunday. Latvia's Anete Sietiņa failed to reach the final.

Croatian athlete Sara Kolak claimed victory in the javelin throw event at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham on Sunday. The 2016 Olympic champion secured the win with her very first attempt, throwing 62.43 metres.

German thrower Julia Ulbricht took second place with a result of 61.53 metres, while Serbia's Adriana Vilagoš finished third with a best throw of 60.93 metres. Vilagoš is a two-time silver medallist at European Championships in the discipline.

Mixed results for Latvian athletes

Latvian javelin thrower Anete Sietiņa failed to advance to the final round, finishing 13th among 29 competitors with a result of 56.24 metres.

Overall, Latvia was represented at the European Championships by seven athletes competing in four athletics disciplines. The Latvian team included javelin throwers Anete Sietiņa, Patriks Gailums and Krišjānis Suntažs, pole vaulter Valters Kreišs, 200-metre sprinter Oskars Grava, as well as race walkers Raivo Saulgriezis in the marathon and Modra Liepiņa in the half-marathon.

The best results for Latvia came from Patriks Gailums, who took third place, and Oskars Grava, who finished fifth. The delegation was accompanied by coaches Gints Palameiks, Mareks Ārents, Viktors Lācis, Ilmārs Saulgriezis, Andis Anškins and Modris Liepiņš, along with physiotherapist Toms Zvonkovs.

The European Athletics Championships in Birmingham concluded on Sunday.
