Hovland and Gerard share lead at Tour Championship after round two

Two players have emerged at the top of the leaderboard after the second round of the Tour Championship in Atlanta, both sitting at 10 under par. Norway's Viktor Hovland, the 2023 Fedex Cup champion, closed his round with a birdie on the final hole to sign for a 66, while American Ryan Gerard had earlier set the clubhouse target with a 65 that included a memorable birdie putt of around 78 feet on the seventh green.

Collin Morikawa and Chris Gotterup are tied for second at nine under. World number one Scottie Scheffler recovered from two early bogeys to shoot 67 and sits two shots off the lead. Cameron Young, winner of March's Players Championship, is among those at eight under following a 62 featuring seven birdies and an eagle.

England's Justin Rose, who carded a bogey-free 65, and compatriot Matt Fitzpatrick are both at seven under and within striking distance of the tournament's $10m top prize. Rory McIlroy endured a mixed round, going two over par within his first four holes after a double bogey on the third, though two late birdies helped limit the damage. He is tied for 23rd at three under heading into the weekend.

Scotland's Robert MacIntyre had a difficult day, following three consecutive bogeys with a double bogey on the par-three 15th after finding water off the tee, finishing at six over for a round of 76. He was one of only three players, along with Min Woo Lee and Xander Schauffele, to finish the second round over par. Elsewhere, Jacob Bridgeman's wayward tee shot on the 18th ended up landing inside a pizza stall.
