Huddersfield stun in-form Leigh with five-try victory

Huddersfield Giants produced an upset result in Super League, defeating a Leigh side that had won eight of their previous nine matches, running out 30-18 winners with five tries to their name.

Leigh opened the scoring through Owen Trout, who finished off a well-placed kick. Huddersfield responded quickly, however, with tries from Harry Rushton and Taane Milne putting the hosts 14-6 ahead at half-time.

Niall Evalds extended Huddersfield's lead early in the second half. Leigh's Umyla Hanley and Huddersfield's Cole Geyer then traded tries, with the hosts still holding the advantage. Robbie Mulhern's try with 11 minutes remaining kept Leigh's hopes alive, but Geyer's second try with six minutes left sealed victory for the Giants.

The win was Huddersfield's seventh of the season, with five coming in their last six matches, and lifted them to 12th in the table, above York. Leigh had arrived hoping to confirm a top-six finish, but the loss did not derail their campaign — they remain fifth after seventh-placed St Helens lost at home to Leeds. Leigh have two games left to secure their play-off spot.

Leigh head coach Adrian Lam said it was one of his side's worst performances in months, praising Huddersfield's physicality and precision while acknowledging his own team lacked sharpness and made too many errors.
