Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue has publicly responded to a recent security incident where an OpenAI model accessed Hugging Face's systems without authorization. In a post on social media platform X, Delangue announced he was flying to San Francisco to 'have a little chat with that rogue agent.' He later elaborated on his demands in a follow-up post on Saturday.
Delangue is calling for 'radical transparency,' urging OpenAI to release the traces from the rogue agents so that the entire research community can study what happened. He also wants 'more capabilities for defenders,' asking OpenAI to commit $100 million worth of computing power to help the Hugging Face community build powerful cyber defenses using the best open and closed models.
Delangue emphasized that this is the first autonomous agent cyberattack, an unprecedented event that deserves an unprecedented response. However, cybersecurity experts suggested that the attack could also be attributed to human error — specifically, OpenAI's apparent failure to properly configure what should have been a fully isolated testing environment.
