Hugging Face CEO: Open Source AI Matters More Than Ever
Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue highlights the growing importance of open source AI as companies move from closed systems to open models due to cost pressures.

The Rise of Open Source AI
According to Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue, open source artificial intelligence (AI) is experiencing a significant boom. Hugging Face has evolved into something akin to a GitHub for the AI industry, where developers can share and download open models and datasets—currently used by roughly half of the Fortune 500.
In a recent episode of TechCrunch’s Equity podcast, Delangue described a recurring pattern: companies start with proprietary APIs but gradually shift to open source models as costs escalate. He argues that the open vs. closed source debate is more critical than ever, especially after Anthropic’s halted Fable release, which highlighted the potential risks of closed ecosystems.
Concerns About Big Tech Control
Delangue expressed concern that a handful of large companies could end up dominating the AI landscape. He noted that Chinese labs currently produce the majority of open models downloaded in the United States, but sees this as a solvable problem rather than a reason to distrust open source itself.
Capital Efficiency and Robotics
Hugging Face has opted for capital efficiency over the traditional Silicon Valley fundraising playbook, even turning down a substantial investment from Nvidia last year. Delangue believes robotics presents an even stronger case for open and transparent AI than chatbots or coding tools, given the intimate access robots have to personal spaces and family life.
Hosted by senior TechCrunch reporter Rebecca Bellan, the podcast delves into why the fight for open source AI is crucial for the future of the technology industry.
