On Tuesday, the final day of the summer transfer window, Alvarez continued training with the squad in Majadahonda, a sign that he will remain under coach Diego Simeone for now.
Barcelona dream and Arsenal pursuit
Throughout the summer, Alvarez made clear his personal wish to join Barcelona, and according to Barca Universal, the Catalan club reportedly gave him assurances about a possible future move after this summer's attempt fell through. At the same time, Premier League champions Arsenal pursued the 26-year-old forward all window, even selling Gabriel Martinelli (to Saudi Arabia) and Gabriel Jesus (to Barcelona) to create room in attack. However, The Independent reports that Arsenal ran out of time to submit a formal offer, with Atletico said to be demanding around €150 million for the player. SB Nation reported that Atletico had given Alvarez written permission to negotiate with Barcelona, but no agreement between the two clubs was ever reached.
Tension with Simeone
The saga was also marked by reports of strained relations between Alvarez and his coach. Regardless of Alvarez's future, Atletico Madrid has agreed a loan deal, with an option to buy, for Juventus forward Jonathan David, as reported by Fabrizio Romano and covered by the London Evening Standard. Spanish outlet Marca stressed that David is not seen as a replacement for Alvarez but rather as additional firepower for an attack that already includes Alexander Sorloth. The transfer window in Spain and England closed at midnight local time on Tuesday, September 1.
