Hyrox athlete apologises and forfeits win after continuing race despite bathroom accident

Hyrox athlete Wietrzyk, winner of the race in Beijing, has issued a public apology after facing significant public backlash over her decision to keep competing following a hygiene-related incident during the competition. In a social media statement, she announced she would forfeit her win.

Wietrzyk said she had been completely fit and healthy at the start of the race and had no reason to anticipate any health issue arising. Despite this, an accident occurred during the event, and rather than stepping off the track, she chose to continue racing to the finish.

Apology and accountability

In her statement, Wietrzyk addressed the people of China, her fellow competitors, spectators and the Hyrox organisers, offering her sincere apology for what happened. She said that looking back, she recognises she should have made a different choice and stepped off the track. She took full responsibility for her decision to continue and expressed deep regret for the discomfort and disruption it caused others.

Organisers respond

Hyrox stated that it has clear biocontaminant and medical procedures in place, but acknowledged that an unforeseen situation arose during the event that created ambiguity in how those protocols were applied and understood by those involved. In an Instagram statement, Hyrox's Fürste committed to improving event processes to prevent similar situations from happening again in the future.
