IBU extends TV deal with EBU through 2034, season kicks off in Munich with Latvian athletes
The International Biathlon Union has agreed a broadcasting rights extension with the European Broadcasting Union through 2034, while the competitive season opens in October in Munich with Latvian participation.
Although summer has not fully faded, preparations for the winter sports season are already underway. Biathlon, one of the most popular individual winter sports in Europe, has received an important confirmation regarding its future on television screens.
Long-term broadcasting agreement
The International Biathlon Union (IBU) and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) have extended their cooperation agreement covering competition broadcasts through the year 2034. This means biathlon fans across Europe will continue to be able to follow the sport on freely accessible public television channels. The agreement also covers broadcasts on modern media platforms, expanding viewers' options to follow the sport not only through traditional television but also in digital formats.
Such a long-term contract provides stability for both broadcasters and the sport itself, allowing broadcast planning over a multi-year horizon.
Season to open in Munich
While the new biathlon season is still some time away, the first significant events are approaching. In October, Munich will host the first major competition of this winter sport's calendar — the summer biathlon championship, which will also feature Latvian athletes. This event traditionally serves as a lead-in to the full winter season, when athletes transition from roller skis to skiing on snow.
