Ida-Viru Central Hospital Postpones Emergency Department Expansion Due to High Bids
Ida-Viru Central Hospital in Kohtla-Järve has postponed the expansion of its emergency department after received bids significantly exceeded the budget.

Ida-Viru Central Hospital in Kohtla-Järve has delayed the planned expansion of its emergency medicine department (EMO) because the bids submitted in the tender were much higher than the hospital's budget, according to a hospital statement cited by the newspaper Põhjarannik.
Hospital board chairman Tarmo Tohver stated that the need for the EMO expansion has not changed and the project's goals remain important for both patients and staff. However, the hospital must make informed decisions and consider its financial resources. Therefore, the project is being postponed at this stage to evaluate possible next steps.
As a result, the EMO department in Kohtla-Järve will continue operating as usual. The hospital announced its intention to build a modern EMO unit at the end of March 2026. The estimated cost of the project, planned to be implemented over 1.5 years, was 7 million euros. The renovated department was designed to separate patients with infectious and non-infectious symptoms and to be adapted for emergency psychiatric cases.
