A public initiative has been launched on the civic platform "Mana balss" (My Voice) seeking to abolish the transport and housing rent expense compensation currently paid to members of the Saeima, Latvia's parliament.

The initiative targets the additional financial benefits MPs receive on top of their salaries, intended to cover costs related to travel and rental housing while carrying out their parliamentary duties.

How the platform works

"Mana balss" allows any resident of Latvia to create or sign a civic initiative. If an initiative gathers enough signatures, it is forwarded for review to the relevant state institutions, including the Saeima itself.

It is not currently known how many signatures the initiative has collected so far or how many are required for it to be formally reviewed by lawmakers.
