Latvia's Ministry of the Interior has drafted amendments to Cabinet of Ministers regulations. Among other things, they would introduce a state fee of €500 for inviting citizens of third countries to work in Latvia, the news agency LETA reports.

Third-country nationals are people from countries that are not members of the European Union. Under the ministry's proposal, the fee would apply when someone from such a country is invited to work in Latvia.

What is known about the proposal

The report indicates that the state fee is only one of the provisions in the amendments, which also contain other measures. The information available so far does not specify when the changes could take effect, which employers would have to pay the fee, or whether the Cabinet has already considered the draft.

Because the amendments have only been prepared by the ministry, the government still has to take the final decision on introducing the fee.
