Petition Calls for Mandatory Financial Literacy Course in All Latvian Universities

A public initiative has been launched on the civic participation platform Manabalss.lv, proposing that financial literacy become a mandatory subject in all Latvian higher education institutions. The initiative seeks to ensure that every student, regardless of their field of study, acquires basic knowledge in financial management.

The online signature collection is currently underway, and the initiative requires ten thousand signatures to be submitted to the Latvian parliament (Saeima) for consideration. If this threshold is met, the Saeima will have to evaluate the possibility of amending relevant legislation to introduce a compulsory financial literacy course.

The authors of the initiative emphasize that financial literacy is a crucial skill in modern society, enabling individuals to make informed decisions about personal finances, investments, and credit. However, the proposal is still in its early stages, and its implementation will depend on public support and subsequent political action.
