Alcohol Sales Restrictions in Latvia Have Not Significantly Reduced Demand
A year after the introduction of alcohol sales restrictions in Latvia, demand has not dropped significantly, but consumer habits have changed; small rural stores have been hit hard.

Impact on Demand and Consumer Habits
A year after stricter alcohol sales restrictions were introduced in Latvia, there has been no significant decline in demand. Representatives of retail chains note that alcohol sales initially fell, but the situation has since stabilized. Consumers have adapted to the new rules and often plan their purchases according to permitted trading hours, although overall customer flow has not changed significantly.
Impact on Small Rural Stores
The restrictions have particularly affected small rural stores. It is not profitable for them to remain open during times when they cannot generate sufficient turnover to cover wages, taxes, and utility bills. Major retail chains, such as top!, Aibe, Lidl, and Rimi, acknowledge that while the goal of the reform is commendable, trading restrictions alone are not a long-term solution to reduce alcohol consumption.
Current Regulations
Since August 1, 2024, alcohol sales on weekdays and Saturdays are only allowed from 10:00 to 20:00, and on Sundays from 10:00 to 18:00.
