Iga Swiatek opens Toronto campaign with straight-sets win
Iga Swiatek defeated Sara Bejlek in the second round in Toronto, while Elina Svitolina needed three sets to beat Jessica Bouzas. Alona Ostapenko is being coached at the event by Piotr Sierzputowski.
Poland's top tennis player Iga Swiatek has made a successful start at the WTA tournament in Toronto. The world number eight, who had a bye in the first round, beat Czech player Sara Bejlek 6:0, 6:3 in the second round. Bejlek is currently ranked 38th, having recently climbed to 34th in the WTA standings.
The 25-year-old Pole entered the match as the clear favourite, with bookmakers offering odds of 1.09 for her victory. Her dominance was visible in the statistics: she won 64 percent of points on her first serve compared to 49 percent for her opponent, and 47 percent on second serve against 32 percent. Swiatek claimed 74 points in total, while Bejlek managed 55. She also converted six of twelve break points, whereas Bejlek used only one of eleven. The ace and double fault counts stood at 1-1 versus 0-4 in Swiatek's favour.

With this result, Swiatek now leads the head-to-head record against Bejlek 2-0. The tournament has also seen attention drawn to Latvia's leading player Alona Ostapenko, who is being coached in Toronto by Polish specialist Piotr Sierzputowski, a former coach of Swiatek until 2021.
In another second-round match, Ukraine's Elina Svitolina, ranked ninth, defeated Spain's Jessica Bouzas, ranked 63rd, 6:7, 7:6, 6:4.
