In the municipality of Rõuge, southeastern Estonia, a local resident found a drone with a broken wing and an attached engine in a hay meadow. Nearly five kilograms of explosives were discovered next to the drone. The find was reported on the evening of June 10.
Bomb disposal experts from the Rescue Department determined that the drone was likely equipped with explosives. They cordoned off the area and neutralized the device using robots. Harri Pussep, head of the Estonian Security Police, stated that according to preliminary information, it is a Ukrainian-made decoy drone that entered Estonia on June 3, when Ukraine launched a counterstrike against Russian targets in self-defense.
At that time, air force radars detected the suspicious drone, and allied fighters were scrambled. However, the drone disappeared from radar screens near the location where the wreckage was later found. A criminal investigation has been initiated under Article 112 of the Penal Code. Pussep noted that the public release of information about the incident was delayed because large-scale military exercises were ongoing.
Recently, as Ukraine carries out attacks on Russian military infrastructure, drones have entered the airspace of Baltic states. Some have flown out, while others have crashed. In both Latvia and Estonia, allied fighters have shot down a drone once.
