Estonia Detains Illegal Migrants for Fourth Consecutive Day
Estonia has tightened measures against illegal migration, detaining over 30 migrants in Tallinn in recent days who entered Europe via the Belarusian border. Police have increased checks at ports and airports, while the interior minister announced additional units will be sent to Latvia.
Estonia continues to intensify its fight against illegal migration. Over the past few days, more than 30 illegal migrants have been detained in Tallinn's port and airport. Authorities believe they are trying to use Estonia as a transit country to reach Finland and further into Western Europe.
On Saturday morning, two more illegal migrants were detained at the Tallinn passenger port while attempting to board a ferry to Helsinki on foot. Police note that these individuals often appear disoriented, drawing the attention of patrols.
Interior Minister Igor Taro explained that migrants enter Estonia because some Schengen countries have introduced additional border controls, forcing them to seek alternative routes. Estonia is used as a transit country towards Finland.
To combat illegal migration more effectively, Estonia has decided to send additional police units to Latvia. "We need to position people not at internal borders but where they can effectively solve the problem – at the external Schengen border," Taro said.
Despite the increased checks, both police and the minister assure that there is no reason for public concern. Most passengers do not notice the additional inspections. However, residents are urged to report any suspicious groups that may be linked to illegal migration.
