Estonia's Police and Border Guard Board announced on Monday, August 31, that over the previous 24 hours officers detained eight drivers found to be under the influence of alcohol while operating vehicles in various regions of the country.

Penalties for drunk driving

The agency reminded the public that driving while intoxicated carries a fine of up to three hundred fine units, arrest, or a driving ban of up to twelve months.

Authorities also stressed that whenever a driver's blood alcohol level reaches or exceeds 1.5 per mille, the case is always treated as a criminal offense.

Police said they continue to carry out regular road checks to reduce the risk of accidents caused by intoxicated drivers and urged residents not to get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol.
