Estonia's first resident ambassador to Moldova presents credentials, backs EU path

Estonia's first resident ambassador to Chisinau, Siiri Kõnigsberg, recently presented her credentials to Moldovan President Maia Sandu. The meeting was reported on Tuesday, September 8, by Estonia's Foreign Ministry press service.

Following the ceremony, the two sides discussed the development of bilateral relations and Moldova's progress toward European Union membership. Estonia supports Moldova's EU accession and is ready to share its experience, including in digital technology and cybersecurity.

Focus on European security

The meeting devoted particular attention to European security and Russia's war against Ukraine, as well as its consequences for Moldova. Kõnigsberg invited Moldova to take part in a conference on Ukraine's reconstruction, to be held in Tallinn in January 2027.

According to the ambassador, Moldova is confidently moving toward EU membership, and Estonia wants to offer the most effective assistance and support possible, drawing on its own experience and strengths in the digital and cyber fields.

Diplomatic relations between Estonia and Moldova were established on November 10, 1992. This October, Estonia will officially open its embassy in Chisinau. In addition to Estonia, Norway has also for the first time appointed a resident ambassador to Chisinau, after upgrading its diplomatic mission to embassy status.
