189 Russian Citizens Arrive in Estonia Daily; Their Final Destination Unknown
Estonian authorities do not compile data on how many Russian citizens use the country as a transit route, although their right to stay in the Schengen area is monitored.
According to an investigation by the Estonian newspaper "Ärileht," approximately 189 Russian citizens arrive in Estonia every day. The newspaper contacted several authorities – the airport, police, Statistics Estonia, and the Ministry of the Interior – to find out where these people go next. The answer was unexpected: while the state controls their right to stay in the Schengen area, it does not prepare reports on how many of them use Estonia merely as a transit corridor to other countries.
The authorities admitted that it is impossible to determine precisely whether these Russian citizens remain in Estonia or travel onward to other Schengen states. However, available data does not indicate an increase in the flow of Russian citizens through Estonia in recent times. This situation raises questions about border control and movement monitoring within the bloc, especially given the geopolitical circumstances.
The newspaper notes that the lack of information about the destinations of these individuals makes it difficult to assess potential risks. Currently, it is unclear whether any mechanism exists to track the movement of Russian citizens after their arrival in Estonia. This highlights gaps in data collection and inter-agency cooperation.
