Estonia sees around a hundred road accidents every day

Estonia's Road Traffic Insurance Fund (LKF) reported that 17,851 traffic-related insurance claims were registered in the country during the first half of 2026 — an average of 99 per day, meaning a claim occurs roughly every 15 minutes. Compared with the same period last year, the number rose by 14%.

LKF board chair Tuuli Pärenson said the half-year figures show that road accidents have become an everyday occurrence in Estonia. Each incident means at least unexpected paperwork for those involved, and in the worst cases, injuries with long-term consequences.

Fewer injuries, but slightly more deaths

Despite the rise in insurance claims, data from the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) shows that fewer people were injured in traffic accidents during the first six months of this year, though the number of fatalities increased slightly.

Across Estonia, 687 accidents involving casualties occurred in the first half of the year, 5% fewer than in the same period last year. These accidents killed 22 people and injured 849.

Taavi Kirss, head of PPA's traffic surveillance department, said the drop in injury-causing accidents is a positive trend, but there is no reason for satisfaction yet. He noted that drivers who run red lights or perform one overtaking maneuver after another pose the greatest danger on the road at those moments, and this harmful habit needs to be abandoned to avoid harming others' health and property.

Jüri roundabout and Ülemiste junction top the list

According to LKF statistics for the past 12 months, the highest number of insurance claims continues to occur at the Jüri roundabout in Rae municipality, with 135 cases causing a total of €360,000 in damage. It is followed by the Ülemiste junction in Tallinn, with 111 cases and €328,000 in damage, and the junction of Pärnu highway and Tammsaare street, with 101 cases.

More than 40% of all insurance claims occur in parking lots. Over the past 12 months, the highest number of reported accidents took place in the parking lot of the Ülemiste shopping centre in Tallinn — 163 cases — followed by the Lõunakeskus shopping centre in Tartu with 100 cases, and the Rocca al Mare shopping centre in Tallinn with 79 cases.
