Estonia has 60 fuel stations and 79 shops ready for crisis situations
Estonia's Reserves Centre says 60 petrol stations and 79 shops have been prepared to keep operating during power outages by autumn 2026, with a target of 110 crisis shops by year's end.
As autumn 2026 approaches, Estonia has 60 fuel stations and 79 shops equipped to function during electricity supply disruptions, according to Priit Ploompuu, a board member of the country's Reserves Centre, speaking to ERR.
Ploompuu said Estonia has more than 550 fuel stations in total, of which roughly 10% have currently been converted into so-called crisis fuel stations. These stations keep a larger fuel reserve than ordinary ones and are fitted with generators to keep pumps running if the power goes out.
According to Ploompuu, around 60 stations already meet this heightened readiness standard and can dispense fuel even without grid electricity — more than 10% of all fuel stations nationwide. Holding this status requires the station to maintain a reasonable fuel stock at all times.
Crisis shops
A similar effort is underway in retail. By the end of this year, Estonia aims to have 110 designated crisis shops capable of continuing to operate during power outages. So far, agreements have been signed with 79 shops.
The Reserves Centre is continuing to look for retail partners willing to convert their shops into crisis outlets and accept a generator supplied by the centre, ensuring they can keep serving customers under difficult conditions.
