Estonia to Allow Military to Collect and Use Blood Outside Standard Regulations in Crises and War
Estonia plans to modernize rules on human biomaterials, allowing its Defense Forces and Defense League to collect and use blood for transfusions outside standard regulatory framework during crises and war.

Estonia's Ministry of Social Affairs has submitted for government approval a plan to modernize regulations on the use of human biomaterials – blood, tissues, cells, and organs. Under the plan, during crisis situations or war, the Estonian Defense Forces and the Defense League ("Kaitseliit"), a voluntary paramilitary organization, will be authorized to collect and use blood for transfusions outside the standard regulatory framework. This measure, previously not permitted, will enable the military to respond more quickly to blood needs in emergencies.
