Lynx attacks dog in Estonia: owners in shock, hunters call situation critical

In Peri forest near Rosma village, a lynx attacked a dog that was walking with its owners on July 21. The attack occurred just 400 meters from a residential house. The owners are in shock, and hunters consider the situation critical. However, the Environmental Board is in no hurry to hunt down the lynx.
Mother and daughter Helena Vasara and Karina Kego went mushroom picking, taking along two dogs – a dachshund and a larger shepherd dog named Niru, who weighs about 35 kilograms. Kego recalls that at some point Niru started behaving strangely – stopping occasionally, leaving the trail, and barking, but returning when called. Kego decided to investigate what had caught the dog's attention, thinking it might be an abandoned kitten.
As she followed the dog, she came to a fallen tree and was about to step over it when a lynx jumped down from the tree right in front of Niru. The lynx struck the dog on the head with its paw, causing blood to spray. The dog yelped and whimpered in pain, and Kego fell over in shock. The family immediately returned home. The incident has left a deep impression on everyone involved.
The Environmental Board has not yet decided to hunt the lynx, despite hunters' concerns that the situation is critical and the predator could pose a threat to humans as well.
