Estonia looks for more stores to join emergency preparedness network
Estonia currently has 60 emergency-ready gas stations and 79 stores fitted with generators, with plans to reach 110 stores by year's end. Officials are calling for more volunteers as 31 generators still await installation.
Estonia's Stockpiling Agency says the country already has 60 gas stations with enhanced emergency preparedness capable of dispensing fuel during a power outage. That figure represents more than 10 percent of Estonia's over 550 gas stations.
Priit Ploompuu, a member of the agency's management board, explained that this designation requires stations to maintain a larger fuel reserve than ordinary stations and to be equipped with generators for emergencies.
Store network still growing
The situation differs for stores equipped with generators: the goal is to reach 110 such stores by the end of the year, but agreements have so far been signed with only 79. More volunteers are needed to keep the program moving forward.
Ploompuu said the agency currently has 31 generators ready and waiting, but lacks partners willing to have them installed on their premises. He called on store owners, local government representatives, and residents who want an emergency-ready store nearby to get involved, noting that a procurement process is currently underway that stores can join.
