Estonia, a Baltic state and European Union member, will move to winter time at the end of next week. Clocks will be turned back by one hour on the night of 24 to 25 October.

All EU countries make the switch. The changeover is tied to Greenwich Mean Time rather than local time, so Estonia will adjust its clocks not at midnight but at 04:00 local time. The country will remain on winter time until the last Sunday of March.

The debate over ending clock changes

The question of abolishing seasonal clock changes has been discussed in the EU for several years. In 2018, the European Commission, the bloc's executive body, proposed ending the practice, but member states have not agreed on further steps.

As Rus.ERR, the Russian-language service of Estonian public broadcaster ERR, reported earlier, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania would prefer to keep permanent summer time. Finland, Estonia's closest northern neighbour, favours winter time instead. Estonia does not want to create a time difference with Finland.
