Free running clubs surge in popularity across Estonia
Free community running clubs known as Sörk are gaining rapid popularity across Estonia, drawing participants of all ages and backgrounds. The movement has now grown to 69 clubs nationwide.
A running club movement is booming across Estonia, with dozens of free Sörk groups bringing together people for exercise, community and fun. The trend was on display at the Mega Sörk event held outside the National Library of Estonia, which was covered by the "Aktuaalne kaamera" news programme.
Kopli Sörk founder Andres Reimand said the club draws a strikingly diverse crowd, including Ukrainians, Britons and Belgians from all kinds of professions. He believes the more varied the group, the more interesting it becomes for everyone, which he sees as part of the appeal of getting outdoors.
Runner Kristlin recalled discovering two years ago that Sörk sessions were free and joining Peetri Sörk. She went on to complete her first-ever half-marathon with the group.
From one club to 69
There are now 69 clubs carrying the Sörk name, including several in Tallinn, one in Peetri, and others in Lüganuse and Saaremaa. Reimand said new clubs are forming daily, and anyone without one nearby is encouraged to simply start their own.
Passersby who spot Sörk runners on the street are welcome to join on the spot. Participants show up with dogs, strollers, bicycles or spouses.
"Aktuaalne kaamera" reporter Iida-Mai Einmaa joined a five-kilometer run around Tallinn's Old Town and Snelli Park. Routes change each time, and a treat — this time pizza — awaits runners at the finish.
Reimand said running offers a window into everyday life, including unexpected scenes in the Kopli district. Participant Harry said the community aspect matters more to him than the sport itself.
Reimand added that Sörk relies entirely on voluntary community contributions, with participants bringing whatever they have to keep the sessions free of charge.
