The Bank of Estonia will issue a commemorative silver coin dedicated to the Forest Brothers on Tuesday, September 22. The coin is priced at 124 euros, while its face value is 15 euros. It has a mintage of 2,500 pieces and was struck by the Lithuanian Mint. The design was created by Kaupo Kangro.
The coin depicts Forest Brothers hiding at the edge of a forest. Tree trunks arranged in a vertical row form a symbolic border between occupied territory and the free land of the Forest Brothers. The forest represents both a refuge and a frontier. Light breaking through between the trees refers to the memory of a free Estonia and hope for its restoration.
The commemorative coin dedicated to the Forest Brothers belongs to the Bank of Estonia's coin series honoring resistance, which aims to recognize the actions and merits of groups and associations that in various ways resisted the occupation of Estonia and stood up for an independent, free Estonia. An earlier coin in the same series was dedicated to the so-called "Finnish boys." In 2027, the central bank plans to issue a specially designed two-euro coin dedicated to veterans of the Estonian Defence Forces.
