Estonian foreign ministry official: lasting peace in Ukraine needs solid security guarantees
Estonian Foreign Ministry Secretary General Jonatan Vseviov said a durable peace in Ukraine must be built on justice, security guarantees and the country's reconstruction. He stressed Ukraine needs to join both the EU and NATO.
Jonatan Vseviov, Secretary General of Estonia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, wrote on social media platform X that any peace settlement in Ukraine must first be just in order to last. According to him, justice means upholding the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, not rewarding aggression, and ensuring accountability for crimes committed during the war.
Vseviov noted that justice alone is not enough. In his view, a durable peace also requires reliable security guarantees, continued support for democracy and the rule of law in Ukraine, and reconstruction of the country on a scale comparable to the Marshall Plan. He added that lasting peace also requires Ukraine's membership in both the European Union and NATO.
The diplomat stressed that those who genuinely want peace should support policies that would make such peace durable. He also reminded that as long as Moscow does not end its war, the international community must continue supporting Ukraine and raising the cost of aggression for Russia.
Vseviov concluded that a just and lasting peace requires action, not just words.
