Estonia's parliament to vote for new president on September 2
Estonia's parliament will convene on September 2 for an extraordinary session to elect the next head of state. Candidates are not yet known except Mart Helme from EKRE.

Estonia's parliament, the Riigikogu, announced on Wednesday that it will gather on September 2 to elect the country's next president. The Speaker, Lauri Hussar (Eesti 200), has called an extraordinary session for the first Tuesday of September at 12 noon following a proposal by President Alar Karis.
The president of Estonia is elected by the parliament, not directly by the people. The past two presidents only secured enough support after several rounds of voting.
Candidates have not yet been revealed and will be announced later this summer. So far, only Mart Helme, a former interior minister from the Conservative People's Party (EKRE), has declared his intention to run. President Karis has stated he will publicly discuss his decision on seeking a second term around midsummer (June 24).
The Center Party has backed Karis to continue in office, but his support among the Reform and Eesti 200 parties remains low.
