Drug scandal rocks Estonian theatre scene as promising young director accused of drugging colleagues

A criminal case was opened in Estonia in late summer against 24-year-old director Oliver Reimann, who is accused of secretly adding the drug MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy or "molly," to colleagues' drinks. The case had remained largely unknown for several years until late August, when the victims decided to speak publicly about what happened. Several people involved were also interviewed by the Estonian outlet Delfi.ee.

A rising star

Reimann is a graduate of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and quickly drew attention from critics and industry professionals. His bachelor's thesis production made it into the repertoire of Estonia's Drama Theatre this spring — theatre critic Jaak Allik wrote in the culture publication Sirp that such recognition for a student production was unprecedented at the theatre. Reimann also worked at Estonian public broadcaster ETV, contributing to the entertainment-information programme "Ringvaade." He was invited to join the Drama Theatre's troupe by well-known director Hendrik Toompere Jr., whose production "Clean Business" also proved popular in Latvia, including at Riga's Dailes Theatre.

Accusations and consequences

According to Estonian media reports, during his studies Reimann on two separate occasions added MDMA to the drinks of fellow students — aspiring actors Robi Varul and Rihard Ester — without their knowledge or consent. The first known incident occurred during a student recreational trip, when Reimann added the substance to Varul's water; the two had previously used MDMA together with Varul's knowledge, but this time he was unaware. Reimann later admitted to what happened and publicly stated that his actions were inexcusable. Reimann has since lost his position at Estonia's Drama Theatre, plans for a new production of his were cancelled, and his once-promising theatre career currently stands halted.
