Estonia's Chancellor of Justice Ülle Madise announces presidential bid
Estonia's Chancellor of Justice Ülle Madise officially confirmed on Monday that she will run for president, ending weeks of speculation. She is the preferred candidate of ruling coalition parties Reform and Eesti 200.

Ülle Madise, Estonia's Chancellor of Justice, announced on Monday that she is putting herself forward as a candidate for the country's presidency. The declaration put an end to weeks of speculation surrounding her political plans.
Madise is currently serving her second seven-year term as chancellor of justice. She has emerged as the favored candidate of the two governing coalition parties, the Reform Party and Eesti 200.
Broad support required
Electing a president in Estonia requires at least 68 votes in the Riigikogu, the national parliament. This means Madise will need to secure backing beyond her coalition allies from other parties represented in parliament.
Commenting on her candidacy, Madise said that if elected president of the Republic of Estonia, she would take on the role with honor and humility.
Presidential candidates can be formally nominated between August 21 and 24. The first round of the presidential vote in the Riigikogu is scheduled for September 2.
