Estonian long jumper Lusti fails to record a valid attempt at European Championships
Estonian athlete Liisa-Maria Lusti fouled all three attempts in the long jump qualification at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham on Saturday, August 15, and did not reach Sunday's final.
Estonian team member Liisa-Maria Lusti had an unsuccessful outing in the long jump qualification round at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, England, on Saturday. The competition took place in difficult windy conditions, demanding strong concentration from athletes during their run-up and takeoff.
Lusti was unable to cope with the wind. She fouled all three of her attempts, finishing the qualification round without a valid mark and therefore failing to advance to Sunday's final.
Notable results at the championships
The previous evening brought several dramatic moments and strong performances. In the men's 400m hurdles, Norwegian star Karsten Warholm won with a new European Championships record of 46.63 seconds.
A European Championships record was also set in the women's 800m, where Switzerland's Audrey Werro won in 1:54.81, finishing ahead of the event's top favorite, Britain's Keely Hodgkinson, and the Netherlands' Femke Bol, a star hurdler who switched to this event. Werro had fallen in the semifinal and only advanced to the final by a special decision of the officials.
In the men's high jump, Italy's legendary Gianmarco Tamberi won again. Having gone through a difficult period due to a string of injuries, the athlete managed to gather his strength for the final, won with a result of 2.32 meters, and became a four-time European champion.
