Ignacio Buse claims Winston-Salem Open title, beating British sensation Arthur Fery

Buse wins second title of the season

Ignacio Buse of Peru beat Britain's Arthur Fery 6-3, 6-2 in the final of the ATP 250 Winston-Salem Open in North Carolina. The win gives the 22-year-old his second ATP Tour title of the year, having also triumphed at the ATP 500 event in Hamburg in May, where he beat American Tommy Paul in the final. According to BBC, the victory also makes Buse the youngest-ever winner of the Winston-Salem tournament.

The match was closely contested early on before Buse took control, breaking to love for a 5-3 lead in the first set. He then opened up a double-break advantage in the second set; although Fery managed to claw back one break, Buse closed out the match by winning three straight games.

Fery's first ATP final follows surprise Wimbledon run

The final was Fery's first ATP Tour final, and he became the first British player to reach the final of this tournament. As a result, the 24-year-old will rise to a career-high 33rd in the world rankings, overtaking Cameron Norrie to become British number one. Just eight weeks earlier, Fery had been ranked outside the world's top 100, before his run to the semi-finals at his home Grand Slam, Wimbledon, transformed his season.

Fery reached the final after his semi-final opponent, Australian James Duckworth, retired through injury while Fery led 6-4, 2-1. Fery said afterwards he hoped Duckworth would recover well. Buse, for his part, reached the final by beating Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 in the other semi-final.

After the final, Fery congratulated Buse and his team, saying it had been a great year for him and that he hoped to finish it strongly. Buse said the win was very special, crediting his team's hard work, while also praising Fery and his team.

Both players now turn to the US Open

Fery travels to New York for his US Open main-draw debut, with the tournament starting on Sunday. He faces a tough opening-round test against Italy's 13th seed, Lorenzo Musetti. He is one of nine British players in the men's and women's main draws, joined by Norrie among others, while Katie Boulter features in the women's draw; Jack Draper and Emma Raducanu are both missing through injury.
