In or near power since independence: what is the Union of Greens and Farmers

The Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS) was established in 2002 through the merger of the Farmers' Union and the Latvian Green Party. Both parties trace their origins back to the Atmoda period, the late-1980s national awakening movement. Their leaderships decided to join forces after a poor showing in the 7th Saeima elections, hoping that a united front would boost their support among voters.

The move proved successful. Since the merger, ZZS has remained in government or close to power for nearly the entire period since Latvia regained independence.

Partnership with the Ventspils party

A key and consistent ally of ZZS is the regional party "For Latvia and Ventspils," led by Aivars Lembergs, the former mayor of Ventspils and a municipal council member. Lembergs has been the subject of lengthy court proceedings that have continued for years.

Together, the two parties form a significant political force within Latvia's party system, one that has shaped the country's political landscape since the restoration of independence.
