Ilze Jumiķe places in top 20 at World Championships in Italy

Orienteer Ilze Jumiķe from Jelgava club "Alnis" achieved a shared 19th place in the elimination sprint at the World Orienteering Championships in Genoa, Italy, while finishing 42nd in the classic sprint.

Achievement at World Championships

The World Orienteering Championships took place in Genoa, Italy, featuring two athletes from Jelgava – Ilze Jumiķe and Dārta Putne, both representing club "Alnis" and the Latvian national team.

Ilze Jumiķe, who recently competed in the Junior World Championships in Sweden, made her senior debut in Genoa. The competition began with the classic sprint qualification. Jumiķe placed 14th in her heat, securing a spot in the final. Dārta Putne, meanwhile, finished 26th in her qualification and did not advance, ending up 71st overall out of 96 participants.

In the final, Jumiķe was in 15th position after the first controls but made several significant mistakes and finished 42nd. Her best performance came in the elimination sprint, where she earned a shared 19th place, the highest result among Latvian athletes at these championships.
