Bears reported in Imanta, but none found; experts warn of growing population
After residents reported possible bear sightings in Riga's Imanta neighborhood, authorities searched the area but found no bears. However, experts note that the bear population in Latvia is increasing and encounters near cities are becoming more likely.
The Riga Municipal Police received two calls about a possible bear near Lāčupe Cemetery and Kurzemes Prospect. Officers inspected the sites and found tracks but no animal. Authorities will continue monitoring and urge residents to call 112 if they suspect a bear.
The Nature Conservation Agency says the forested area between Imanta, Bolderāja, and Jūrmala may serve as a migration corridor for bears, so their appearance there is not ruled out. A bear was caught on camera there a few years ago.
Experts remind that when encountering a bear, especially a mother with cubs, do not approach, photograph, or film. Stay calm, slowly back away, and only at a safe distance leave the area. Bears usually attack only if they feel threatened.
