Art historian, restoration specialist, painter, and writer Imants Lancmanis, who has not been the director of Rundāle Palace for six years, is still associated with the site. He calls it his life's work, which has brought great satisfaction but also required significant sacrifices. In an interview, Lancmanis admits he would not want to live in the palace, even if given the most beautiful part. He explains that the palace has a very strong influence and energy that holds a person in its grip and does not let go. The palace is too large and feels oppressive. For this reason, the two-kilometer distance to his home proved crucial – at that distance, the palace's fascination, or as he calls it, radiation, ends.
