India's 'cockroach' protest called off after education minister quits
India's youth-led protest movement, known as the 'cockroach' protest, ended its demonstrations after Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned from his post.
The youth movement that emerged after India's chief justice called unemployed young people 'cockroaches' announced the end of its protest on Sunday, following the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, whom protesters had demanded step down.
In his resignation post on social media, Pradhan said he respected the aspirations and dreams of the youth and was pained by recent events. He emphasized that he submitted his resignation to prevent anti-national forces from exploiting the situation, preserve national unity, and allow students to focus on their studies.
Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Jan Andolan (CJP), upon hearing the news, shouted from the stage: 'We have done it!' Celebrations erupted with singing, dancing, and distribution of sweets. Many protesters said they had waited for this day for weeks and were not ready to leave without celebrating. Large crowds remained at the protest site even after the official call-off.
The movement was triggered by the chief justice's remark, which he later clarified referred to people with fake degrees, but the term had already become a symbol of defiance. The CJP quickly amassed a huge following, especially on Instagram, where it has 26 million followers.
Protesters demanded education system reforms, greater accountability for exam paper leaks, and Pradhan's resignation. Major opposition parties, activists, and celebrities showed solidarity. Pressure on the government intensified after a violent crackdown on July 20, when police used batons and tear gas, injuring about 300 people.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke his silence on Thursday, announcing fast-track courts to punish those involved in paper leaks. Later, he revealed a draft of a new strict law on the issue.
Although the protest has ended, Dipke stated the fight continues. He vowed to seek compensation for families of students who died by suicide after a medical exam was cancelled and demanded action against police officers accused of using excessive force. 'Remember, do not mess with the cockroach,' he added.
