Indian celebrities fiercely criticized for silence on Cockroach protests

Hundreds of thousands of young Indians have taken to the streets as part of the Cockroach Janata party (CJP) movement, demanding accountability for exam paper leaks. The protests, one of the largest in India in years, pose an unprecedented challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government. Many protesters have expressed anger at the silence of India's biggest celebrities, whom they accuse of cowardice.

The sit-in protest began on June 20 in Delhi, with participants enduring heat, monsoon rains, and humidity. The demonstrations led to the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Prasad, a key demand of the CJP. This was the first time in 12 years that a loyal Modi minister was forced to resign due to public pressure. On Monday, police used batons, tear gas, and allegedly pellet guns against the peaceful protesters.

Protesters criticized celebrities for commenting on global tragedies while ignoring domestic issues. Seema, a cleaner in Delhi, said: "A few words on social media expressing moral support would have been welcome." Among the few who spoke, Bollywood actor Salman Khan told students to go home and not worry their parents, insisting Modi had the situation under control—a statement widely condemned. Actor Anupam Kher warned about "political opportunists," echoing BJP ministers.

Some celebrity comments were vague. Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar posted on X: "We must create a culture where hard work is rewarded, honesty is encouraged, and merit wins." Notable exceptions were veteran actors Naseeruddin Shah, who condemned Bollywood's silence, and Shabana Azmi, who joined the protests. Azmi told The Times of India: "Why can't they listen to them? We need to build their hope, not crush their spirit."

Influencer Alexander Balakrishnan noted that some celebrities fear losing contracts, but the biggest ones are protected by their fame. The protests continue, and the silence of celebrities remains a hot topic.
